Blog #1: Chapter 1

A few days ago in class I thought a genre was just a theme of some sort, but oh, was I wrong. Within reading the first page of this chapter, I have come to a whole new understanding of the term genre. They way we focus on a genre is completely up to us, the way we see it. Think of something you're interested in and sure enough there will be multiple genres to choose from. For instance, the arts has dozens of genres associated with it such as dance, song, and theatre, and within those genres are sub-genres. We don't realize it, but our everyday lives are filled with genres even if we're not learning about them in class. To connect the arts with rhetorical appeals, I decided to involve the art of theatre. Any on/off broadway show conveys a message that will either be enlightening or upsetting. The three appeals known as ethos, logos, and pathos are the main reasons for audience persuasion. Those catches the audiences attention, pathos appeals to their emotions, and logos is what bring the entire story together in the end. Having learned about these appeals since middle school had created the pathway for understanding them even better now at a much higher level. All in all, genre can be a variety of things, but understanding the purpose they have throughout our lives is what makes a genre useful in anything we choose to do.
